Commentary: Gavin Newsom is a lame duck. Can his presidential hopes still take flight?

September 15, 2026 2 min read

California Governor Gavin Newsom has spent much of his tenure taking big policy swings and positioning himself as the primary foil to Donald Trump, but he is now entering the precarious territory of becoming a lame duck. With term limits looming, the man who currently wields immense power in Sacramento will soon return to private citizenship. For a politician whose gaze is firmly fixed on the 2028 presidential race, this transition creates a complex dilemma: how does one maintain national relevance and momentum without the shield and megaphone of an elected office?

Some analysts argue that stepping away from government could actually be a strategic advantage. History shows that attempting to manage a massive state like California while campaigning for the presidency is an exhausting balancing act. Former strategists have noted that you cannot effectively run a state from a cellphone in an airport terminal during early primary stops in New Hampshire. By exiting office, Newsom gains the freedom to devote his entire schedule to building a national coalition, following a path similar to Ronald Reagan, who spent several years out of the governor’s mansion before ascending to the White House.

To differentiate himself from future Democratic rivals, Newsom appears to be leaning into bolder, progressive stances on issues like healthcare and affordability. Rather than shrinking away from labels like socialism—which Republicans often use as a political weapon—he has signaled a willingness to embrace ambitious ideas such as Medicare for All. In an era where voters are feeling the squeeze of inflation at the grocery store, pairing populist economic appeals with decisive action could carve out a unique lane for him that separates him from more cautious moderates.

However, this strategy carries significant risks. Critics suggest that leanings toward the left could make him vulnerable to charges of being too radical for swing voters, mirroring past Democratic failures where state-level policies became liability magnets in general elections. Furthermore, there remains a tension within his own party regarding his identity; while some see him as too progressive, others point to his cozy relationship with Silicon Valley as evidence that he is too centrist. As he prepares to become simply Mr. Newsom again, his ability to navigate these contradictions will determine if his presidential dreams remain grounded or finally take flight.
