John Fetterman accidentally calls himself a ‘lifelong Republican’ at Texas Tribune Festival

September 28, 2026 2 min read

Senator John Fetterman provided a moment of unexpected levity at the Texas Tribune Festival this past Saturday when he accidentally described himself as a lifelong Republican. The slip of the tongue occurred during a question and answer session after an audience member asked why the Pennsylvania Senator chooses not to run as an independent candidate. Upon realizing his mistake, Fetterman laughed along with the crowd, jokingly predicting that the blunder would inevitably be clipped and shared across social media.

Despite the momentary confusion, Fetterman was quick to clarify that he sees no actual reason to abandon the Democratic Party. He argued that while there is room for various opinions within a big tent, he remains firmly committed to his current affiliation, particularly regarding his staunch support for Israel. However, he did acknowledge that his willingness to collaborate with members of the opposite party has created significant friction with some of his fellow Democrats.

The gaffe comes at a time of heightened speculation regarding Fetterman’s political trajectory. Once viewed as a champion for the progressive wing upon winning his seat in 2022, he has shifted toward more centrist positions and frequently criticized the direction of his own party. This evolution has led some Republicans to openly welcome him into their fold, especially following recent appearances alongside GOP colleagues.

Addressing those who believe he may eventually switch parties or face internal backlash, Fetterman noted that he recognizes there is likely no viable electoral path for him as a Republican. Nevertheless, he remained candid about his standing within the Democratic caucus, suggesting that if the party ever decided to expel or vote him out due to his diverging views, they would be entirely within their rights to do so.
