A Nation Divided As Israel Heads To The Polls

October 26, 2026 2 min read

The streets of Tel Aviv were filled with tens of thousands of protesters on the eve of Tuesday’s parliamentary elections, marking a volatile moment in Israeli history. Demonstrators gathered at Hostages Square to demand accountability for the security failures that allowed the devastating terror attacks of October 7, 2023, to occur. For many in the crowd, the election is less about specific platforms and more about whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains fit to lead. While thirty nine different parties are contesting the seats, analysts suggest the real contest is centered entirely on whether Netanyahu can maintain his grip on power.

Public sentiment remains sharply polarized across the country. In local markets, some citizens still view Netanyahu as a charismatic leader capable of navigating global pressures and protecting national interests. However, others see him as a politician whose tenure has been marred by corruption trials and attempts to weaken the judiciary. This divide is deeply personal for survivors like Margalit Moses, who was kidnapped during the initial onslaught. Rather than shifting toward the right wing following the tragedy, Moses believes Israel must move toward a more moderate government capable of pursuing long term peace with its neighbors.

Leading the charge against Netanyahu is Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief of staff whose own family suffered losses during the conflict. Eisenkot presents himself as a pragmatic alternative to Netanyahu’s populist approach and argues that the current administration prolonged the war to satisfy far right coalition partners. Beyond foreign policy, Eisenkot focuses on internal stability, promising to launch a formal commission of inquiry into October 7 and end exemptions for ultra Orthodox men regarding military service. These domestic flashpoints have helped push his party ahead in recent polling.

Despite an uphill battle and a surging opposition, political experts warn that counting out Benjamin Netanyahu is always a mistake. Known for his mastery of legislative maneuvering and coalition building, he possesses an unrivaled ability to engineer partnerships even when public opinion seems firmly against him. Whether through strategic bargaining or political leverage, there remains a distinct possibility that he will navigate this crisis once again and emerge as prime minister over the next year.
