NFL Kickoff Game preview: Patriots try to be more competitive in Super Bowl rematch vs. Seahawks

September 10, 2026 3 min read

The NFL is kicking off the 2026 season with a high stakes grudge match on Wednesday night, pitting the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. While the championship game ended in a decisive 29-13 victory for Seattle, the actual contest felt far more lopsided than the scoreboard suggested. The Seahawks defense completely stifled New England for the first three quarters, leaving the Patriots searching for answers until a late, meaningless touchdown salvaged some pride. Now, both teams return to the gridiron with different motivations and revamped rosters looking to define their trajectories for the new campaign.

New England enters this matchup desperate to erase the memory of that embarrassment. Under head coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye, the Patriots have spent the offseason aggressively upgrading their receiving corps, most notably acquiring stars like A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. Despite these additions, New England faces an immediate hurdle as star running back TreVeyon Henderson has been ruled out with an ankle injury. For a team that finished last season with a stellar 14-3 record but suffered a heartbreaking finale, winning this opener would serve as a powerful statement against critics who claimed their previous success was merely a product of a soft schedule.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Seahawks find themselves in an unusual position as an overlooked powerhouse. Much of the national spotlight has shifted toward their division rivals in Los Angeles, allowing Seattle to fly under the radar despite significant personnel changes. The loss of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to Kansas City and the departure of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak leave questions about how Seattle will maintain its dominance. With Zach Charbonnet sidelined by an ACL tear, rookie first-round pick Price will likely shoulder a heavy load in the backfield throughout September, providing one of the biggest wild cards of the evening.

As bettors eye a tight spread favoring Seattle by roughly three points, much of the intrigue centers on whether Drake Maye can solve a defensive unit that dominated him months ago. The Seahawks may be missing key pieces and lacking media hype, but they possess the confidence of champions ready to defend their turf. Whether this meeting proves more competitive than its predecessor remains to be seen, but with playoff narratives already beginning to form on opening night, neither side intends to walk away from Wednesday’s game feeling unsatisfied.
